I Have Called You By Name
Isaiah 43:1-2 NLT
". . . I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown."
Today, Scott and I served together on the "mountain team". Global Health Outreach packed a basket with a month's worth of groceries and our team visited and delivered a basket to three families.
We delivered the first basket to a young woman grieving the recent loss of both of her parents and a miscarriage. Scott shared this scripture and prayed with her husband. I placed my hands on her growing pregnant belly and prayed with her.
Their Home
Next, we met a mother and her 9-year-old daughter at a crossroads because she stated that it was too difficult to maneuver our vehicle up a winding and narrow dirt road to her home. We introduced ourselves, and she shared her struggles to provide for her family.
Her story was confusing, but she said she made a verbal deal with a wealthy family that if she took care of their 100+ chickens, they would give her some property. Possibly (I said it was confusing), after having a relationship with their son, they dismissed her with only the clothes on her back.
When the local pastor asked if she had a relationship with Jesus, she said "no" because she had lived a life filled with sin. He shared the salvation message of hope with her.
Our team member, Jacob, a pre-med student from Maryland, presented her with a Spanish/English Bible. She said that she could not read. I stepped forward, speaking to and encouraging her school-age daughter to read to her mother. Her intelligent eyes brightened with interest. At that moment, I recognized myself as a child and I knew . . . I knew that her mother may or may not follow Jesus, but Jesus would meet this precious child as she begins to turn the pages and read the Word. My heart filled with joy. I wept.
We delivered our third and final basket of food to a double amputee gentleman struggling with a non-healing and possibly infected wound from a recent surgery. The house was spotless (clean) with beautiful tile floors. Christmas decorations filled the room. His daughter assisted him in moving from his mosquito net-covered bed to his wheelchair to meet us. He excitedly shared a story of his faith journey, attending a local church and reading from a large print Bible. His diabetes affects his eyes, and he grieves that his eyes grow tired and blurry after reading only one chapter.
After we visited the families, we returned to the GHO compound and ate our packed lunch. Soon, children began to arrive at the compound for art class. The team began passing out watercolors, paint brushes, and paper. By the time we finished, 25+ children gathered around the picnic tables. So fun.
Tomorrow will be the final day of our mission trip. We look forward to visiting patients together at the hospital.
